This week, we found multiple examples of fun Christmas chromatography experiments for you to try. All you need are some of our chromatography papers to get started. The rest of the materials can be found around the house.

Before getting started, review our article about chromatography and how it works: https://www.preclaboratories.com/easy-chromatography-paper-experiment/.

Now, for the fun stuff.

Christmas Bulb Ornament

With this version from the Inspiration Laboratories blog, you can make round Christmas ornaments with chromatography paper and markers. In addition to our chromatography paper, you’ll need:

  • Washable markers
  • Cup
  • Dropper
  • Container of water
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glue
  • Ribbon
  • Thread or string

Christmas Light Ornament

We found a couple versions of this experiment, again using the same materials, including chromatography paper and water-soluble markers, to make a string of “lights” for the Christmas tree. Check out Science Spot and Bemidji State University’s instructions.

Maybe we should have a contest for the most scientifically decorated Christmas tree!

Christmas Candy Chromatography

Last but not least, we think you should try this candy chromatography experiment featured on our blog using red and green Christmas M&M’s.

What other fun Christmas chromatography activities can you dream up?
